Annual Amaryllis Show March 11, 2021

The Garden Club of Somerset Hills had its Annual In-House Amaryllis Show done under Covid-19 parameters. So instead of being able to view all the beautiful amaryllis in an in- person show, it is presented in a photography show.

The parameters of the show were for the amaryllis to be in bloom, photographed against a white background and accompanied by an entry card. We had 6 classes: Class A 'Blushing Bride’ 4 entries, Class B ‘Nymph’ 3 entries, Class C white amaryllis 4 entries, Class D red Amaryllis 2 entries, Class E Re-Bloomers 2 entries, Class F For Show. In passing, entry cards were looked at, and one thing the passer wanted to point out was that the bulbs were not propagated by the growers. So that box was corrected if it had been ticked. If one had grown the bulb from seed and then it had bloomed, it would have been propagated by the grower. In fact last year there was an entrant who had done that, which is quite a feat.

As this is a learning show, the judges felt that though there were some entries that did not have the white background, those entries were passed as the grower had had success getting their bulb to bloom. However, the judges noted that having a distracting background took away from the presentation of the plants. Clean pots and top dressing were very beneficial to the overall display of the entry. Plants in full bloom were awarded the most points as well as those that had more blossoms per scape. Congratulations to all the growers, it was a lovely show!!!! Many thanks to Grania Allport for her help creating this wonderful presentation! Click on the link to enjoy the beautiful Amaryllis Slideshow:
